Chart of accounts templates

The same starting points we use for new clients: set up for Canadian businesses and built to import into QuickBooks Online. To import: the gear icon, then Import data, then Chart of accounts. Check the preview screen before you finish: if a detail type doesn’t match, QuickBooks quietly picks the first one in its list.

Before you import

In QuickBooks Online, turn on account numbers first (Settings, Account and settings, Advanced, Chart of accounts, tick Enable account numbers, then Save), then go to Settings, Import data, Chart of accounts. On the review screen, untick the accounts that don’t fit you: sole proprietors untick every account ending in “corporations”, and corporations untick every account ending in “sole proprietors”. Sales tax accounts aren’t included, because QuickBooks creates them when you set up sales tax. If QuickBooks says some accounts weren’t imported because they’re already in QuickBooks, that’s fine. You already have those accounts, so nothing is missing. Want a second pair of eyes on your setup? Book your free 30-minute consult.
